In the days when there were two daily newspapers in Rochester, NY, Laurie Bennett and Nancy Monaghan were competitors. Bennett covered courts for the (now-defunct) Times-Union and Monaghan covered courts for the Democrat & Chronicle.
Bennett wrote an in-depth story about the Krauseneck murder after it had gone unsolved for a year. Later, as an investigative projects reporter at the Detroit News, she again examined the case. After leaving the News, she was a reporter and new media director of the Detroit Free Press, and launched two internet companies.
Monaghan left the courts beat at the Democrat & Chronicle to become metro editor of the newspaper, overseeing coverage of the Krauseneck case in 1982. Later that year, she joined the startup team at USA Today, where she served as managing editor for news. She became president & publisher of three Gannett newspapers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Jersey, and retired in 2007.
Since 2016, when the Krauseneck case was reopened, the former newspaper rivals have collaborated on this story for an upcoming book.
